Outpost Of Progress – Pariah (Album – ScentAir Records)

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Italian duo Riccardo Pinzuti and singer/songwriter Max Bindi set up Outpost Of Progress in 2014. They claim to be influenced by John Carpenter, Giorgio Moroder, Depeche Mode, and Kavinsky. They joined hands together with ScentAir Records to unleash their debut album, which was released early 2019.

Content: The work takes off with an intro, but quite rapidly you’ll notice the electro-pop inspiration running through the songs. There also is a kind of astral element emerging now and then. The songs are dreamy and sometimes into a more explicit ambient dimension, which might refer to their John Carpenter inspiration. The vocals have something sweet, but still a bit sensual.

+ + + : This album is not exactly setting the world of electro-pop music on fire, but it has something refreshing. Outpost Of Progress have composed a rather personal album avoiding cheap clichés, which resulted in a few enjoyable songs such as “On The Heights Of Despair”, “Run Away”, “Gateway”.

– – – : A few songs are missing some punchy elements. “Pariah” is fully entertaining, but without a real apotheosis.

Conclusion: This is an honest debut album revealing some cool ideas, but missing a hit song!

Formatosi nel 2014, il duo italiano composto da Riccardo Pinzuti (musiche) e da Max Bindi (voce) si è fatto le ossa attraverso una serie di EP, singoli ed apparizioni su compilation in un contesto più affine alla scena dance, approdando infine ad una formula più vicina a dinamiche synthpop che ha fruttato un deal con la russa ScentAir per la pubblicazione di “Pariah”, primo album del progetto. I due non hanno certo dimenticato l’esperienza sin qui maturata, tant’è che il loro sound odierno, pur virando verso lidi più notturni e raffinati, conserva un groove squisitamente ballabile e funzionale in chiave dancefloor, che finisce per dominare l’opera con buoni esiti. Quello degli OOP è un sound che pare prediligere le atmosfere suadenti e che non si rifugia mai nella mera ricerca della melodia immediata o del refrain di facile presa, distinguendosi dal resto della scena synthpop anche per la deliberata rinuncia a certe forti caratterizzazioni tipiche del genere. Le influenze citate vanno da Moby a Moroder, dai Massive Attack a Bowie, dai Kraftwerk ai Depeche Mode (questi ultimi omaggiati con una cover onesta e più soffusa di “No More” dal recente “Spirit”), lezioni ben apprese che hanno condotto alla creazione di un suono capace di differenziarsi per indole e metodo. Mai irruenti in alcun modo, ed anzi sempre inclini all’eleganza strutturale (anche a livello vocale), i Nostri sciorinano sedici tracce che non inseguono la variante fine a sé stessa, ma che ruotano piuttosto attorno ad un groove sempre ben educato, insaporendo a più riprese la formula col supporto della corista Giulia Ferini (“On The Heights Of Despair”, “Quicksand”, “In The Swim”, “When You Lie With Me” etc.). È verso il finale che i due implementano qualche variante in più, a partire dalle cadenze più misurate di “Closer” e proseguendo col picco qualitativo “Under The Radar”, dove le strutture si fanno altamente fascinose prima che la song si accenda; bene anche “Hurry On Down” e “Run Away”, entrambe dotate di una costruzione più alternativa, mentre la chiusura ci regala uno strumentale di notevole buon gusto come “Gateway”. L’impressione è quella che gli OOP stiano pian piano cambiando pelle, e sarà dunque interessante vedere quale strada intraprenderanno con le prossime mosse discografiche, possibilmente saggiando prima a dovere un lavoro valido a tutti i livelli – produzione compresa – come “Pariah”, ideale rampa di lancio verso una rinnovata identità.
